Learn skills and sport of Roller Derby.
This is a structured, partially planned session allowing flexibility around attendance and juniors input on the day.
Juniors work towards passing 3 levels to deem them safe and knowledgeable to play at full contact.
Sessions can be a mix of working in groups of similar ability focusing on skills and drills aimed at their skill level. Other times it may be as a whole group, mixing abilities to bring everyone together and allowing the lower level skaters to work with the more advanced skater. We have observed learning from their peers can make things come across more better understood than from us!
Everyone should have a mouthguard in their kit bag, this is mandatory for anyone doing contact, but we recommend everyone having one to get comfortable to wearing one and to be more safe when its busy, working as a big group or when playing some fun games (which can get a little rough at times)
The final 30 minutes overlaps our adult sessions. This will be time to put their skills to the test through fun games and activities and wind down the session while our adults use this time to either join in or use the space to get warmed up.
This overlap brings the club together and reduces any anxiety the juniors may have towards any of them when volunteering and to feel more confident if deciding to move up into the adult sessions to advance their skills in roller derby.
Please note that parent(s)/guardian(s) of children under 8 years of age will need to be present to assist with supervision of a minor helping our volunteers maintain a good adult to child ratio in case of emergencies.
